Tumor Microenvironment‐induced Degradable Ultrathin Gadolinium Oxide Nanoscroll for Magnetic Resonance Imaging‐monitored Activatable Cancer Chemotherapy

The development of biodegradable inorganic nanoparticles with tumor microenvironment‐activated enhanced therapy is urgently needed for current precision cancer medicine. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin lanthanide nanoscrolls (Gd2O3 NSs) with tumor microenvironment‐induced biodegradation‐promoted cancer chemotherapy. The Gd2O3 NSs showed highly controlled magnetic properties, which enabled their high‐resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capacities for tumors. Importantly, Gd2O3 NSs possessed pH‐responsive degradation and anticancer drug release activities, which endowed their excellent tumor penetration ability and microenvironment‐enhanced synergistic tumor chemotherapy. Gd2O3 NSs could efficiently load drug (DOX, 80%) and significantly inhibit tumor growth with negligible cellular and tissue toxicity both in vitro and in vivo. This study may provide a novel strategy to design tumor microenvironment‐responsive inorganic nanomaterials for biocompatible bioimaging and biodegradation‐enhanced cancer therapy.
