Squamous cell carcinoma transformation to EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma: a case report and literature review

EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) dramatically responds to initial epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), although acquired resistance develops in about 1 year. A variety of acquired resistance mechanisms have been reported, such as secondary T790M mutation, bypass or alternative pathway activation, or histological and phenotypic transformation. Herein, we report a rare case of EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma that transformed to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), along with a secondary T790M mutation.
