Whether bathed in pearly sunlight reflected by its surrounding lagoon or shrouded in mist, Venice presents a sumptuous mirage, a surfeit for the eyes. But what must it be like for blind or visually impaired residents or visitors? How do they navigate its narrow alleys and large irregularly shaped squares? How do they avoid falling into its canals? Does the city offer other aesthetic pleasures to compensate for the beauty that remains unseen by them?
