Hydrogenation of CO2 to Formate with H2: Transition Metal Free Catalyst Based on a Lewis Pair

Transition‐metal free CO₂ hydrogenation to formate catalyzed by tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) and M₂CO₃ is reported with a TON of up to 3941. In their Communication (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201809634), X. B. Hu, Y. T. Wu and co‐workers show mechanistic studies that revealed that BCF reacted with K₂CO₃ to afford a Lewis pair K₂[(BCF)₂CO₃], which can react with H₂ and CO₂ to produce formate.
