PurposeThe aim of this study was to compare ChronOS™ (beta-tricalcium phosphate), BioOss®, and their addition to autogenous bone graft in a 1:1 ratio in human maxillary sinuses bone augmentation.Materials and MethodsThirty maxillary sinuses were divided in five groups: group 1, which included six maxillary sinuses grafted with autogenous bone graft alone; group 2 with six maxillary sinuses with ChronOS™; group 3 with six maxillary sinuses grafted with ChronOS™ and autogenous bone graft in a 1:1 ratio; group 4 with six maxillary sinuses grafted with BioOss®; and group 5 which included six maxillary sinuses with BioOss® and autogenous bone graft in a 1:1 ratio. The number of samples for each group were determined by the statistical power test.ResultsThe area medians for the new bone formed for groups 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were 121917.0 μm2, 83787.0 μm2, 99295.0 μm2, 65717.0 μm2, and 56230.0 μm2, respectively. Statistical significant differences occurred between groups 3 and 5, 1 and 4, and 1 and 5 (p < 0.05). The median area of the remaining biomaterial for each group was 2900.5 μm2, 5291.0 μm2, 2662.0 μm2, 56258.5 μm2, and 64753.5 μm2 for group 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Statistical significant differences occurred between groups 1 and 5, 3 and 5, and 2 and 5 (p < 0.05). The connective tissue presented in group 1 was 67829.0 ± 22984.6 μm2; it was 97445.9 ± 18983.3 μm2 for group 2, 88256.0 ± 21820.5 μm2 for group 3, and 65501.8 ± 6297.6 and 70203.2 ± 13421.3 μm2 for groups 4 and 5, respectively.ConclusionChronOS™ and its mixture with autogenous bone graft presented with behavior similar to that of autogenous bone graft alone. However, the groups with BioOss® demonstrated results for immunolabeling assessment indicating maturation of the grafted bone.
