Response to Power and Saris

I appreciate this thoughtful response.1 'Patients as ethnographers' was offered as a playful thought experiment, in the context of my monthly column on reflective practice for Postgraduate Medical Journal and my own professional work as a medical educator.2 Power and Saris have brought to bear the weight of their experience as anthropologists in order to highlight some of the important differences between what I wrote and academic ethnography, and I accept all their comments in this respect. I am pleased to say I am now engaged in dialogue with other ethnographers who have responded to the article with enthusiasm, and I hope this may lead to the kind of collaborative project that Power and Saris describe in their final sentence.
