Discrimination of Picea chihuahuana Martinez populations on the basis of climatic, edaphic, dendrometric, genetic and population traits

fig-1-1x.jpg

Background Picea chihuahuana, which is endemic to Mexico, is currently listed as "Endangered" on the Red List. Chihuahua spruce is only found in the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO), Mexico. About 42,600 individuals are distributed in forty populations. These populations are fragmented and can be classified into three geographically distinct clusters in the SMO. The total area covered by P. chihuahuana populations is less than 300 ha. A recent study suggested assisted migration as an alternative to the ex situ conservation of P. chihuahuana, taking into consideration the genetic structure and diversity of the populations and the predictions regarding the future climate of the habitat. However, detailed background information is required to enable development of plans for protecting and conserving species and for successful assisted migration. Thus, it is important to identify differences between populations in relation to environmental conditions. The genetic diversity of populations, which affect vigor, evolution and adaptability of the species, must also be considered. In this study, we examined 14 populations of P. chihuahuana, with the overall aim of discriminating the populations and form clusters of this species. Methods Each population was represented by one 50 × 50 m plot established in the center of its respective location. Climate, soil, dasometric, density variables and genetic and species diversities were assessed in these plots for further analyses. The putatively neutral and adaptive AFLP markers were used to calculate genetic diversity. Affinity Propagation (AP) clustering technique and k-means clustering algorithm were used to classify the populations in the optimal number of clusters. Later stepwise binomial logistic regression was applied to test for significant differences in variables of the southern and northern P. chihuahuana populations. Spearman's correlation test was used to analyze the relationships among all variables studied. Results The binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that seven climate variables, the geographical longitude and sand proportion in the soil separated the southern from northern populations. The northern populations grow in more arid and continental conditions and on soils with lower sand proportion. The mean genetic diversity using all AFLP studied of P. chihuahuana was significantly correlated with the mean temperature in the warmest month, where warmer temperatures are associated to larger genetic diversity. Genetic diversity of P. chihuahuana calculated with putatively adaptive AFLP was not statistically significantly correlated with any environmental factor. Discussion Future reforestation programs should take into account that at least two different groups (the northern and southern cluster) of P. chihuahuana exist, as local adaptation takes place because of different environmental conditions.

The ways parents cope with stress in difficult parenting situations: the structural equation modeling approach

fig-1-1x.jpg

The purpose of this study was to verify a theoretical model of parents' responses to difficulties they experienced with their child. The model presents relationships between seven variables: (a) discrepancy between parental goal and the child's current level of development, (b) parental experience of a difficulty, (c) representation of the child in the parent's mind, (d) parent's withdrawal from the parenting situation, (e) seeking help, (f) distancing oneself from the situation, and (g) applying pressure on the child. The study involved 319 parents of preschool children: 66 parents of three-year-olds, 85 parents of four-year-olds, 99 parents of five-year-olds and 69 parents of six-year-old children. Structural equations modeling (SEM) was used to verify the compounds described in the theoretical model. The studies revealed that when a parent is experiencing difficulties, the probability increases that the parent will have one of two reactions towards that type of stress: withdrawal from the situation or applying pressure on the child. Experiencing difficulties has no connection with searching for help and is negatively related to distancing oneself from the situation.

Clinical evaluation of zirconia-based all-ceramic single crowns: an up to 12-year retrospective cohort study

Abstract

Objectives

This study aims to investigate the incidence of clinical complications with tooth-supported zirconia-based all-ceramic single crowns and identify pertinent risk parameters.

Materials and methods

A retrospective cohort study (May 2004 to April 2016) utilizing clinical records of patients receiving yttrium-oxide–partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP)-based all-ceramic crowns placed at Tohoku University Hospital was performed. The length of time of treatment success (complication event-free) and restoration survival (including minor complication events and remaining clinically functional) were estimated using Kaplan–Meier analysis. Multilevel survival analysis was used to identify risk factors.

Results

One hundred thirty-seven crowns were evaluated (mean follow-up time, 7.0 years). A total of 21 crowns experienced at least one complication with fracture of veneering ceramic being the most common (16 crowns). Estimated success and survival rates at 5 years (96.9 and 98.5%, respectively) decreased at 10 years to 62.1 and 67.2%, respectively. The risk of complications was significantly higher for molar crowns compared to anterior crowns (p < 0.01). A significant association of complications with metal antagonist restorations was shown by univariate analysis (p < 0.01).

Conclusions

Given the study limitations, Y-TZP single crowns placed on anterior teeth demonstrated encouraging clinical results over a period of up to 10 years. However, there is a substantial risk of complications with posterior teeth within 10 years of restoration placement.

Clinical relevance

Treatment with zirconia-based all-ceramic crowns for molar teeth with metal antagonist occlusion should be undertaken with caution.

Craniofacial and dental characteristics of patients with vitamin-D-dependent rickets type 1A compared to controls and patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia

Abstract

ᅟObjectives

Vitamin-D-dependent rickets type 1A (VDDR1A) is a rare inherited disease caused by defective activation of vitamin D. The aim of the study was to describe the craniofacial characteristics and the dental phenotype of patients with genetically confirmed VDDR1A. The VDDR1A findings were compared to findings in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) and healthy controls.

Material and methods

Ten patients with VDDR1A were identified. The reference group for the comparison of cephalometric findings was 49 adults without chronic disease. The reference group for the comparison of dental findings was 30 adults with XLH. Clinical examination, clinical photos, and radiographs were obtained. Cephalometric analysis was performed. Photos and radiographs were visually evaluated.

Results

The depth of the posterior cranial fossa (d-p and d-s-iop) in VDDR1A adults was reduced compared to the reference group (p < 0.05). Five (83%) of six adults with VDDR1A and one (4%) of 25 adults with XLH had enamel hypoplasia on several incisors and/or canines (p < 0.001). Three (75%) of four adults with VDDR1A and none of 16 adults with XLH had several first molars with enamel hypoplasia (p = 0.004). Five of 7 (71%) adults with VDDR1A and 24 of 30 (80%) adults with XLH had endodontically affected teeth.

Conclusions

The dental aberration of VDDR1A is more in line with the dental aberration of nutritional rickets than with the dental aberrations in XLH, suggesting the combination of low availability of both calcium and phosphate to be critical in periods of enamel formation.

Clinical relevance

Knowledge on craniofacial and dental aberration in patients with rare diseases, e.g., inherited rickets, is of importance to the dental practitioner, especially during diagnostics and treatment in special care units.

Transnasal endoscopic ultrasound-guided reduction of maxillary sinus wall fracture

Abstract

Surgical morbidity from open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of maxillary sinus wall fracture often surpasses the benefits of ORIF. Hence, the authors devised transnasal endoscopic-assisted reduction of maxillary sinus wall fracture (TERM) without internal fixation as a minimally invasive surgery for maxillary sinus wall fracture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of TERM in cadavers and patients. Six cadavers were dissected to evaluate the feasibility of TERM. In addition, 20 patients with maxillary sinus wall fractures who underwent TERM in a tertiary hospital from August of 2013 to December of 2015 were enrolled in this study. Demographic factors, type of anesthesia, computed tomography (CT) scans, clinical characteristics of patients, and patient satisfaction with surgery were analyzed. Cadaveric study showed that endoscopic inferior meatus antrostomy is a feasible method of approaching the maxillary sinus wall in cadavers. In addition, counterforce could be applied to the maxillary sinus wall by pushing packed Vaseline-soaked gauze or using a zygomatic process approach via a Gillies incision. Clinical experience revealed that patients experienced good facial contour restoration postoperatively. The extent of fractured bony segments was reduced on postoperative CT without complications. Patient satisfaction with TERM was greater than that with ORIF (p = 0.031). TERM showed its feasibility in both cadaveric study and clinical study. TERM can be a good alternative to ORIF, especially in patients who are reluctant to undergo a facial incision.

Association of Metabolic Syndrome and Oxidative DNA Damage in HIV/AIDS Patients

Abstract

HIV-infected adults may be likely to have metabolic syndrome (MS) at younger ages and in the absence of obesity compared with general population. In the present study, we determined prevalence of MS and its association with oxidative deoxy nucleic acid (DNA) damage in HIV-1 infected patients with different ART status. We used plasma level of the oxidized base, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage. To measure plasma 8-OHdG we used 8-OHdG enzyme-linked, immunosorbent assay. The biomarkers of MS were insulin resistance, Cholesterol/HDL ratio, Waist circumference and Hypertension. MS and oxidative DNA damage were significantly higher in HIV-positive patients with second line ART and first line ART than ART-naive patients. In a logistic regression analysis, increased MS was positively associated with the increased DNA damage (OR: 29.68, 95%:13.47, CI: 65.40) P = 0.0001. ART plays a significant role in the development of MS and oxidative DNA damage in HIV-positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy. Awareness and knowledge of MS and DNA damage in HIV/AIDS patients may prove helpful to clinicians to manage non-AIDS diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. To determine exact role of ART in induction of MS and DNA damage larger studies are warranted.

Social Dominance Orientation, Language Orientation, and Deaf Identity

AbstractThe notion of the Deaf community as a linguistic-cultural minority has been increasingly recognized and studied over the last two decades. However, significant differences of opinion and perspective within that population typically have been neglected in the literature. Social dominance orientation (SDO), a theoretical construct, typically focusing on intergroup perceptions and relations, is one aspect that has been left unexplored and might prove particularly enlightening. The present study investigated SDO among 119 deaf and 49 hearing young adults through a standardized SDO questionnaire. SDO was examined with regard to cultural identities (deaf, hearing, bicultural, and marginal), cochlear implant use, and language orientation (sign language or spoken language). The deaf partic...

Comparison of a 2.0-mm locking system with conventional 2.0- and 2.4-mm systems in the treatment of mandibular fractures: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Purpose

A comparative study of the use of the 2.0-mm locking fixation system with conventional systems in the treatment of mandibular fractures was performed.

Methods

For this study, 87 consecutive patients with 112 mandibular fractures were randomized to receive either 2.0-mm locking plates (n = 45) or conventional 2.0- or 2.4-mm plates (n = 42) and had a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Fractures were classified based on the degree of displacement and complexity. Statistical analyses were used to verify possible differences between the groups when separately compared unfavourable and favourable cases (p ≤ 0.050).

Results

Despite randomization, systemic diseases were more frequent in the 2.0-mm locking group in favourable cases. Substance abuse occurred predominantly in the 2.0-mm locking group, in unfavourable and favourable fractures. There were more cases of complex fractures in the conventional group in unfavourable cases. One case involving a major postoperative complication occurred in the locking group (2.2%) and three cases occurred in the conventional group (7.1%) but with no significant difference between groups. In this study, there were no major differences between conventional and locking 2.0-mm locking systems with regard to the outcome of treated mandibular fractures, showing that both are adequate as long as the criteria of their indication and requirements for installation are met.

Conclusions

It was concluded that the 2.0-mm locking fixation system can replace conventional systems in the treatment of mandibular fractures; in addition, this approach was effective in the treatment of unfavourable fractures that typically require the 2.4-mm conventional system.

The Effect of Word Frequency on Phonemic Accuracy in Children With Cochlear Implants and Peers With Typical Levels of Hearing

This study evaluates (a) whether word frequency influences word accuracy and (b) whether this is also the case for children with a history of auditory deprivation. More specifically, the influence of word frequency on phonemic accuracy is examined in deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI), and compared to age-matched children with typical hearing, between word onset and age 7. Results show that highly frequent words are produced more accurately, except for words in the highest frequency regions (i.e., predominantly closed-class words). This effect is more pronounced in children with typical hearing when compared with children with CI. Thus, children with CI are sensitive to word frequency, but to a lesser extent than peers with typical hearing. (Source: Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf...

A study on the oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residue resource utilization by the exploration and development of shale gas

Abstract

Based on the requirement of national energy conservation and environmental protection, attention has been given to building an environment-friendly and resource-saving society. Shale gas oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues (ODPRs) have been used as the main research object to developing new technology which can convert the residues into a harmless and recyclable material. Using the test data of ODPR, we analyze the development prospect in the building material industry and provide a scheme to utilize this particular solid-waste efficiently. Theoretically speaking, the ODPR resource utilization such as admixture of cement, making sintered brick, and non-fired brick, by the exploration and development of Fuling shale gas is feasible.

Research on nutrient pollution load in Lake Taihu, China

Abstract

The eutrophication of Lake Taihu is the joint result of internal and external pollution. Research on the sources and flux loads of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) has great significance for the control and management of the eutrophication issues facing Lake Taihu. We used hydrologic and water quality surveys of the surrounding rivers, precipitation investigations, and an experimental simulation of suspended sediment to analyze the sources of TN and TP to Lake Taihu and to estimate the flux loads of TN and TP. Our results indicate that (1) surrounding rivers, atmospheric deposition, and sediment suspension were the three main sources of TN and TP, with annual flux loads of 29.6 thousand t and 2.8 thousand t, respectively; (2) for the flux load of TN, influxes from surrounding rivers accounted for 61.1%, while atmospheric deposition contributed 23.5%, with both of these sources varying seasonally. Total nitrogen released from sediments contributed 15.4% of the TN load of Lake Taihu; (3) for TP flux load, surrounding rivers accounted for 42.8% and also showed seasonal variation. Atmospheric deposition and sediment release accounted for 17.9 and 39.3% with no significant seasonal variation. This article quantitatively analyzed the sources and loads of TN and TP and provided a basis for pollution control in Lake Taihu.

Effect of Topically Administered Chitosan-N-acetylcysteine on Corneal Wound Healing in a Rabbit Model

Purpose. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of topically administered chitosan-N-acetylcysteine (C-NAC) on corneal wound healing in a rabbit model. Methods. A total of 20 New Zealand White rabbits were included in the randomized, masked, placebo-controlled experiment. A monocular epithelial debridement was induced by manual scraping under general anesthesia. Animals were randomized to receive either C-NAC two times daily or placebo. Monitoring of corneal wound healing was performed with ultra-high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) and epithelial fluorescein staining. Measurements were done immediately after and up to 72 hours after wound induction. Results. No difference in wound size was found immediately after surgical debridement between the C-NAC group and the placebo group. Wound healing was significantly faster in the C-NAC group compared to the placebo group ( for both methods). A good correlation was found between the OCT technique and the epithelial fluorescein staining in terms of wound size (). Conclusions. Administration of C-NAC containing eye drops twice daily leads to a faster corneal wound healing in a rabbit model of corneal debridement as compared to placebo. Ultra-high-resolution OCT is considered a noninvasive, dye-free alternative to conventional fluorescein staining in assessing corneal wound healing also in humans.

Triterpenoids principle of Wedelia calendulacea attenuated diethynitrosamine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma via down-regulating oxidative stress, inflammation and pathology via NF-kB pathway

Abstract

The aerial part of Wedelia calendulacea have been used in Ayurveda, Unani, Tibetan, Siddha and other folk medicine systems to protect the liver and renal tissue. Liver is considered as primary metabolizing site of body, which is prone to damage by endogenous and exogenous toxicants. A reason for liver toxicity, and major causes of the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). 19-α-Hydroxyurs-12(13)-ene-28 oic acid-3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (HEG), a triterpenoids found in the higher plants, has been known to possess protective effect against various toxicants. The aim of the current study was to scrutinize the hepatoprotective mechanism of HEG against DEN-induced oxidative stress, hyperproliferation, inflammation and apoptosis tissue injury in Wistar rats. Invitro cell lines study of HEG scrutinized against the Hep-G2 and HuH-7 cells. A single dose of DEN (200 mg/kg) and double dose of phenobarbitol were administered to induce the liver damage in rats; the dose treatment of HEG was terminated at the end of 22 weeks. Macroscopical study was performed for the confirmation of hepatic nodules. The serum and hepatic samples were collected for further biochemical and histopathological analysis. Hepatic; non-hepatic; Phase I and II antioxidant enzymes were also examined. Additionally, we also scrutinized the inflammatory cytokines viz., tumor necrosis factor-α, interlukin-6, interlukin-1β, and Nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-kB), respectively. Histopathological study was also performed for analyzing the changes during the HCC. HEG confirmed the reduction of growth and deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis of both cell lines. DEN successfully induced the HCC in all group, which was significantly (p < 0.001) altered by the HEG in a dose-dependent manner. The decreased level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and altered membrane-bound enzyme activity were also observed. HEG inhibits the phase I, II and antioxidant enzymes at the effective dose-dependent manner, which were considered as the precursor of the HCC. The alteration of phase I, II and antioxidant enzymes confirmed the inhibition of inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress, which directly or indirectly inhibited the NF-kB expression. Collectively, we can conclude that the HEG inhibited the growth of Hepatocellular carcinoma via attenuating the NF-kB pathway.

Simultaneous Travel and Hoist Maneuver Input Shaping Control Using Frequency Modulation

This paper presents an input shaping control system for overhead crane operations involving simultaneous hoist and travel maneuvers. The control system utilizes model-based partial feedback linearization with frequency modulation. Traditional input shaping controllers target specific system frequencies. Therefore, they are incapable of accommodating the time dependant frequency associated with simultaneous hoist and travel crane maneuvers. Frequency modulation is used to tune the time-dependent system frequency to the design frequency of a primary input shaping controller. Partial feedback linearization is used to eliminate the time-dependent damping of the system. The primary input shaper frequency is based on lowest operating frequency of the system associated with the longest hoisting cable length operation. Simulations results, using primary zero-vibration (ZV) and zero-vibration-derivative (ZVD) input shapers, are presented. General arbitrary input travel and hoist commands are simulated. Results demonstrate the ability of the proposed control system to eliminate residual oscillations in all simulated cases.

Optimal and Nonlinear Dynamic Countermeasure under a Node-Level Model with Nonlinear Infection Rate

This paper mainly addresses the issue of how to effectively inhibit viral spread by means of dynamic countermeasure. To this end, a controlled node-level model with nonlinear infection and countermeasure rates is established. On this basis, an optimal control problem capturing the dynamic countermeasure is proposed and analyzed. Specifically, the existence of an optimal dynamic countermeasure scheme and the corresponding optimality system are shown theoretically. Finally, some numerical examples are given to illustrate the main results, from which it is found that (1) the proposed optimal strategy can achieve a low level of infections at a low cost and (2) adjusting nonlinear infection and countermeasure rates and tradeoff factor can be conductive to the containment of virus propagation with less cost.

Experimental Study on the Mechanical Properties of Porcine Cartilage with Microdefect under Rolling Load

Objectives. To investigate the mechanical responses of microdefect articular cartilage under rolling load and find out the failure rule. Methods. Rolling load was applied to the porcine articular cartilage samples with rectangular notches of different depths. The displacement and strain near the notches were obtained by the noncontact digital image correlation technique. Results. The strain value and peak frequency around the notch increased; the maximum equivalent strain value could be observed at both bottom corners of the notch; the equivalent strain value first increased and then decreased at the points in the superficial and middle layers with the increase of rolling velocity; the points in the deep layer were less affected by rolling velocity; the equivalent strain value of the points in the superficial layer declined after rising with the increase of defect depth, while a decreased trend could be found for the points in the middle and deep layers. Conclusions. The shear strain, which rose with the increase in defect depth, was the main factor in cartilage destruction. The cartilage tended to be destructed firstly at the bottom corner of the defect. Rolling velocity showed significant effects on superficial and middle layers. Cartilage had the ability to resist destruction.

Lifestyle Modulators of Neuroplasticity: How Physical Activity, Mental Engagement, and Diet Promote Cognitive Health during Aging

The number of the elderly across the globe will approximate 2.1 billion by 2050. Juxtaposed against this burgeoning segment of the population is evidence that nonpathological aging is associated with an increased risk for cognitive decline in a variety of domains, changes that can cause mild disability even before the onset of dementia. Given that pharmacological treatments that mitigate dementia are still outstanding, alternative therapeutic options are being investigated increasingly. The results from translational studies have shown that modifiable lifestyle factors—including physical activity, cognitive engagement, and diet—are a key strategy for maintaining brain health during aging. Indeed, a multiplicity of studies has demonstrated relationships between lifestyle factors, brain structure and function, and cognitive function in aging adults. For example, physical activity and diet modulate common neuroplasticity substrates (neurotrophic signaling, neurogenesis, inflammation, stress response, and antioxidant defense) in the brain whereas cognitive engagement enhances brain and cognitive reserve. The aims of this review are to evaluate the relationship between modifiable lifestyle factors, neuroplasticity, and optimal brain health during aging; to identify putative mechanisms that contribute positive brain aging; and to highlight future directions for scientists and clinicians. Undoubtedly, the translation of cutting-edge knowledge derived from the field of cognitive neuroscience will advance our understanding and enhance clinical treatment interventions as we endeavor to promote brain health during aging.

Evaluation of Complication Rates after Breast Surgery Using Acellular Dermal Matrix: Median Follow-Up of Three Years

Introduction. Acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) are now commonly used for breast reconstruction surgery. There are various products available: ADMs derived from human (HADM), porcine (PADM), or bovine (BADM) sources. Detailed long-term follow-up studies are necessary to detect differences in complication rates between these products. Material and Methods. From 2010 to 2015, forty-one patients underwent 52 ADM-breast reconstructions in our clinic, including oncologic breast reconstructions and breast augmentation revisions (). 15x HADMs (Epiflex®/DIZG), 21x PADMs (Strattice®/LifeCell), and 16x BADMs (Tutomesh®/RTI Surgical) were implanted. Retrospective data collection with median follow-up of 36 months (range: 12–54 months) was performed. Results. Overall complication rate was 17% after ADM implantation (HADM: 7%; PADM: 14%; BADM: 31%). In a composite endpoint of complications and Red Breast Syndrome, a lower event probability was observed between BADMs, PADMs, and HADMs (44%, 19%, and 7%, resp.; for the trend). Furthermore, capsular contracture occurred in 6%, more frequently as compared to the current literature. Conclusions. When ADM-based reconstruction is indicated, the authors suggest primarily the use of HADMs and secondary the use of PADMs. It is shown that BADMs have the highest complication probability within our patient cohort; nevertheless, BADMs convey physical advantages in terms of flexibility and better aesthetic outcomes. The indication for the use of ADMs should be filled for each case individually.

Thermal Transport and Rectification Properties of Bamboo-Like SiC Polytypes Nanowires

Bamboo-like SiC nanowires (NWs) have specific geometric shapes, which have the potential to suppress thermal conductivity by phonon boundary scattering. In this work, phonon transport behaviors in the 3C-SiC, 4H-SiC, and 6H-SiC crystal lattices are studied by the Monte Carlo (MC) method, including impurity scattering, boundary scattering, and Umklapp scattering. Phonon relaxation times for Umklapp (U) scattering for the above three SiC polytypes are calculated from the respective phonon spectra, which have not been reported in the literature. Diffuse boundary scattering and thermal rectification with different aspect ratios are also studied at different temperatures. It is found that the thermal conductivities of the bamboo-like SiC polytypes can be lowered by two orders of magnitude compared with the bulk values by contributions from boundary scattering. Compared with bamboo-like 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC NWs, 3C-SiC has the largest U scattering relaxation rate and boundary scattering rate, which leads to its lowest thermal conductivities. The thermal conductivity in the positive direction is larger than that in the negative direction because of its lower boundary scattering relaxation rate.

Flexible Zinc–Tin Oxide Thin Film Transistors Operating at 1 kV for Integrated Switching of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators Arrays

Flexible high-voltage thin-film transistors (HVTFTs) operating at more than 1 kV are integrated with compliant dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) to create a flexible array of 16 independent actuators. To allow for high-voltage operation, the HVTFT implements a zinc–tin oxide channel, a thick dielectric stack, and an offset gate. At a source–drain bias of 1 kV, the HVTFT has a 20 µA on-current at a gate voltage bias of 30 V. Their electrical characteristics enable the switching of DEAs which require drive voltages of over 1 kV, making control of an array simpler in comparison to the use of external high-voltage switching. These HVTFTs are integrated in a flexible haptic display consisting of a 4 × 4 matrix of DEAs and HVTFTs. Using a single 1.4 kV supply, each DEA is independently switched by its associated HVTFT, requiring only a 30 V gate voltage for full DEA deflection. The 4 × 4 display operates well even when bent to a 5 mm radius of curvature. By enabling DEA switching at low voltages, flexible metal-oxide HVTFTs enable complex flexible systems with dozens to hundreds of independent DEAs for applications in haptics, Braille displays, and soft robotics.

Thumbnail image of graphical abstract

High-voltage flexible thin-film transistors (HVTFTs) that can operate at an unprecedented 1 kV voltage are developed to drive dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). 16 HVTFTs are integrated with 16 DEAs, each operating at 1 kV, but individually switched using a 30 V gate voltage. Combining flexible HVTFTs with DEAs will lead to compact, complex, and compliant haptics and soft robotics.

Operationalization of Sign Language Phonological Similarity and its Effects on Lexical Access

This study investigated whether phonological similarity facilitates lexical retrieval in sign languages using measures from a new lexical database for American Sign Language. Additionally, it aimed to determine which similarity metric best fits the present data in order to inform theories of how phonological similarity is constructed within the lexicon and to aid in the operationalization of phonological similarity in sign language. Sign repetition latencies and accuracy were obtained when native signers were asked to reproduce a sign displayed on a computer screen. Results indicated that, as predicted, phonological similarity facilitated repetition latencies and accuracy as long as there were no strict constraints on the type of sublexical features that overlapped. The data converged to s...
