Abstract
PURPOSE: To make a comparison between depression levels of juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who underwent bracing and (2) to identify the factors that influenced the extent of depression of the patients.
METHODS: 112 AIS (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis) patients and 96 JIS (juvenile idiopathic scoliosis) patients were included in our study. The demographic characteristics and the SDS, SDQ, and CES-DC scores were used for the evaluation or selection of relative factors of depression in patients (and parents). Cognitive evaluations, based on the WISC-R scale and an independent evaluation that was based on the WeeFIM scale, were conducted.
RESULTS: The mean of the CES-DC index in the AIS group (38.3±3.0) was higher than that of the JIS group (23.8±4.6), and the differences were significant (p<0.05). Finally, the age of the initial bracing, the duration of bracing, parental depression, the Cobb angle at the initial age of bracing, cognitive function, independence, peer problems, prosocial behaviors, emotional symptoms, and total difficulties were significant factors in our regression model for the JIS patients; the AIS patients showed similar results, except for the age of the initial bracing, cognitive function, and independence.
CONCLUSIONS: AIS and JIS patients who underwent bracing showed differences in the extent of depression, and female adolescents were more vulnerable to depressive psychological statuses. Higher levels of cognitive function and independence, as well as an older age of bracing, a longer duration of bracing, a larger Cobb angle, negative attitudes of parents, and undesirable SDQ scores contributed to a higher depression extent.
