The environmental damage caused by cadmium (Cd) pollution is of increasing concern in China. While the overall plant response to Cd has been investigated in some depth, the contribution (if any) of protein phosphorylation to the detoxification of Cd and the expression of tolerance is uncertain. Here, the molecular basis of the plant response has been explored in hydroponically raised rice seedlings exposed to 10 μΜ and 100 μΜ Cd2+ stress. An analysis of the seedlings' quantitative phosphoproteome identified 2454 phosphosites, associated with 1244 proteins. A total of 482 of these proteins became differentially phosphorylated as a result of exposure to Cd stress; the number of proteins affected in this way was six times greater in the 100 μΜ Cd2+ treatment than in the 10 μΜ treatment. A functional analysis of the differentially phosphorylated proteins implied that a significant number was involved in signaling, in stress tolerance and in the neutralization of reactive oxygen species, while there was also a marked representation of transcription factors.

Synergistic effects of dendritic cell targeting and laser-microporation on enhancing epicutaneous skin vaccination efficacy

Publication date: 28 November 2017

Due to its unique immunological properties, the skin is an attractive target tissue for allergen-specific immunotherapy. In our current work, we combined a dendritic cell targeting approach with epicutaneous immunization using an ablative fractional laser to generate defined micropores in the upper layers of the skin. By coupling the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 to mannan from S. cerevisiae via mild periodate oxidation we generated hypoallergenic Bet-mannan neoglycoconjugates, which efficiently targeted CD14+ dendritic cells and Langerhans cells in human skin explants. Mannan conjugation resulted in sustained release from the skin and retention in secondary lymphoid organs, whereas unconjugated antigen showed fast renal clearance. In a mouse model, Bet-mannan neoglycoconjugates applied via laser-microporated skin synergistically elicited potent humoral and cellular immune responses, superior to intradermal injection. The induced antibody responses displayed IgE-blocking capacity, highlighting the therapeutic potential of the approach. Moreover, application via micropores, but not by intradermal injection, resulted in a mixed TH1/TH17-biased immune response. Our data clearly show that applying mannan-neoglycoconjugates to an organ rich in dendritic cells using laser-microporation is superior to intradermal injection. Due to their low IgE binding capacity and biodegradability, mannan neoglycoconjugates therefore represent an attractive formulation for allergen-specific epicutaneous immunotherapy.

Manifestations of Inhalant Allergies Beyond the Nose

The upper and lower airways are linked epidemiologically and pathophysiologically. The upper and lower airways are considered a single, functional unit characterized by shared immunologic mechanisms, often referred to as the unified airway. Upper and lower airway inflammatory disease frequently coexist in the same patient. Allergic rhinitis and rhinosinusitis are associated with asthma. Treatment of both diseases impacts asthma outcomes. The otolaryngologist may be the first physician to suspect and diagnose asthma in patients with upper airway complaints. A thorough understanding of the relationship between allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, and asthma will facilitate early identification of asthma and improve patient outcomes. Polysomnographic findings in craniopharyngioma patients

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether damage to the hypothalamus due to craniopharyngioma or consequent surgery may involve the sleep-wake regulatory system, resulting in sleep disturbances and sleepiness.

Methods

Seven craniopharyngioma patients and 10 healthy controls were evaluated with sleep questionnaires including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, polysomnography, and a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Five patients and eight controls had lumbar puncture performed to determine hypocretin-1 levels.

Results

Patients tended to feel sleepier than control individuals of the same age (p = 0.09). No subjects had symptoms of hypnagogic hallucinations, sleep paralyses, or cataplexies. Four patients and one control had periodic leg movements (PLMs). One patient had fragmented sleep pattern, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep without atonia, and PLMs. One patient had short sleep periods during the daytime. Four patients had fragmented sleep pattern. With the MSLT, four patients and two controls had mean sleep latency of < 8 min. One patient and three controls had sudden onset of REM sleep in 2/5 and 3/5 sleep periods, respectively. All subjects showed normal hypocretin-1 levels. Four patients had electrophysiological findings indicative of central hypersomnia including one patient meeting the criteria of narcolepsy.

Conclusion

The sleep-wake regulatory system may be involved in craniopharyngioma patients.

Grounding a natural background level for fluoride in a potentially contaminated crystalline aquifer in south India

Abstract

Fluoride contamination is one of the most alarming issues for those countries that depend on groundwater drinking water supply. A careful examination of the hydrogeochemical conditions and routine monitoring of fluoride level are therefore quintessential. Estimation of natural background level (NBL) of fluoride becomes significant information for assessing the current and future contamination episodes. Vellore District in Tamil Nadu is a hard rock terrain known for its F-rich groundwater. In this study, we attempted to form a benchmark for fluoride using hydrochemical pre-selection (based on TDS and NO3) and cumulative probability plots (CPP). Principle components analysis is (PCA) applied to evaluate the corresponding factor grouping of the total of 68 samples, which is later mapped using geostatistical tool in ArcGIS. From the CPP, we derived the NBL of F as 0.75 mg/L. This value is compared with the observed concentration in each sample and they were spatially plotted based on the NBL. Resultant plot suggests that W-NW part of the study area has exceeded and E-EW regions are below the NBL of F. Spatial variation of the factor scores also supported this observation. Grounding an NBL and extending it to other parts of the potential contaminated aquifers are highly recommended for better understanding and management of the water supply systems.

Heavy metal pollution in Nanchang City and its health implication on traffic policemen

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the health effect of heavy metal pollution in air pollutants on traffic policemen. This study will facilitate the scientific evaluation of health status of traffic policemen. PM10 samples were collected from industrial area, congested traffic area and residential area respectively in Nanchang City, and the concentrations of heavy metals were analyzed. The traffic policemen were examined through chest X-rays. The total of 637 urine samples and 142 blood samples have been collected, and the concentrations of Pb in samples were detected. Vehicle flux data of Nanchang City were collected from the Department of Transport's Traffic Management. Statistic analyses were carried out by statistics software of Excel 2003 and SPSS20.0, and the health effect of heavy metal pollution of PM10 on the traffic policemen was evaluated. The discharge of pollutants from enterprises is an important reason for the high content of heavy metals in urban air pollution. With the rapid growth of urban traffic flow, Bayi Bridge becomes an important transportation hinge in Nanchang City, and the bidirectional traffic flow rate through the bridge at peak hours reached 99 vehicles per minute. The latent hazard of occupational harm on the traffic policemen caused by automobile exhaust is increasing. The concentration of Pb in the urine and blood samples from traffic policemen working in Nanchang City was 268.310 ± 177.031 and 22.873 ± 21.137 μg/L, respectively. Both results (2.04% of Pb in urine and 18.31% of Pb in blood) exceeded the highest limit of observed occupationally outdoor workers. This study provides an initial contribution for the assessment of city air pollution, esp. the health effect of heavy metal (Pb) pollution on traffic policemen.

In situ remediation of tetrachloroethylene and its intermediates in groundwater using an anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier

Abstract

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is among the most ubiquitous chlorinated compounds found in groundwater contamination. Its chlorinated degradation by-products remain highly toxic. In this study, an anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system consisting of four different functional layers was designed to remediate PCE-contaminated groundwater. The first (oxygen capture) layer maintained the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at < 1.35 mg/L in influent supplied to the second (anaerobic) layer. The third (oxygen-releasing) layer maintained DO concentration at > 11.3 mg/L within influent supplied to the fourth (aerobic) layer. The results show that 99% of PCE was removed, mostly within the second layer (anaerobic). Furthermore, the toxic by-products trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) were further degraded by 98, 90, and 92%, respectively, in layer 4 (aerobic). Thus, the designed anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system could control both PCE and its degradation by-products, showing great potential as an efficient remediation alternative for the in situ treatment of PCE-contaminated groundwater.

Effects of metal ions on the cultivation of an oleaginous microalga Chlorella sp.

Abstract

A coupling technique to purify wastewater for lipid production based on microalgae is attractive and promising for its potential to clean water and as biofuel feedstocks. Metal ions from wastewater might be involved in microalgal cultivation. In this study, the effects of metal ions on algal growth, lipid-producing potential, and water purifying capability of Chlorella sp. HQ were investigated. The effects of metal ions (Cr6+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Na+, and K+) on alga lipid production combined with water purification showed that Chlorella sp. HQ had strong resistance to metal ions and could efficiently remove them (Fe3+ 85.40~98.73%, Mn2+ 45.63~97.24%, Zn2+ 81.93~100.00%, Cu2+ 81.71~95.19%, Cr6+ 20.07~45.60%). Meanwhile, nutrient removal (total nitrogen (TN) 78.15~94.77%, total phosphorus (TP) 80.52~100%) was not inhibited by metal ions. Besides that, the highest algal biomass, lipid yield, and triacylglycerol (TAG) yield peaked at 350.00 ± 31.50, 87.50 ± 3.54, and 33.39 ± 19.42 mg L−1, respectively, with the addition of Fe3+ (6.6 mg L−1), Na+ (101.81 mg L−1), and K+ (31.9 mg L−1). The lipid/TAG content significantly increased up to 54.17 ± 11.91%/44.92 ± 0.42%, 100%/100%, 32.56 ± 12.40%/37.53 ± 4.58%, and 77.50 ± 1.77%/46.19 ± 1.06%, separately, with the addition of Cr6+(0.50 mg L−1), Cu2+(5.02 mg L−1), Zn2+(5.05 mg L−1), and Mn2+(50.52 mg L−1).

Marine sedimentary lipidomics of the glacial-interglacial changes during the lower Pleistocene (SW Iberian Margin)

Abstract

Analyses of trimethylsilyl-derivatized neutral lipids by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry afford a wealth of information contained in the marine sediments. This information is useful for unraveling the processes associated with past climate changes such as those from glacial and interglacial periods. Studies of samples from the Iberian Margin deposited about 1,300,000–1,400,000 years ago afforded the qualitative identification and quantification of n-alkanes, n-alkan-1-ols, isoprenoids, triterpenoids, sterols, hopanols, alkenones, alkenols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Using this information, the lipidomic approach has allowed to identifying differences in sea surface temperatures, marine productivity, microbial degradation processes, and inputs from continental plants between these periods. Differences in predominant higher plant species related to climate changes have also been observed.

Converging SUMO and ubiquitin signaling: improved methodology identifies co-modified target proteins [Technological Innovation and Resources]

Post translational protein modifications (PTMs) including small chemical groups and small proteins, belonging to the ubiquitin family, are essential for virtually all cellular processes. In addition to modification by a single PTM, proteins can be modified by a combination of different modifiers, which are able to influence each other. Since little is known about crosstalk between different ubiquitin family members, we developed an improved method enabling identification of co-modified proteins on a system-wide level using mass spectrometry. We focused on the role of crosstalk between SUMO and ubiquitin during proteasomal degradation. Using two complementary approaches, we identified 498 proteins to be significantly co-modified by SUMO and ubiquitin upon MG132 treatment. These targets included many enzymatic components of PTM machinery, involved in SUMOylation and ubiquitylation, but also phosphorylation, methylation and acetylation, revealing a highly complex interconnected network of crosstalk between different PTMs. In addition various other biological processes were found to be significantly enriched within the group of co-modified proteins, including transcription, DNA repair and the cell cycle. Interestingly, the latter group mostly consisted of proteins involved in mitosis, including a subset of chromosome segregation regulators. We hypothesize that group modification by SUMO-targeted ubiquitin ligases regulates the stability of the identified subset of mitotic proteins, which ensures proper chromosome segregation. The mitotic regulators KIF23 and MIS18BP1 were verified to be co-modified by SUMO and ubiquitin upon inhibition of the proteasome and subsequently identified as novel RNF4 targets. Both modifications on MIS18BP1 were observed to increase simultaneously during late mitosis, while the total protein level decreased immediately afterwards. These results confirm the regulation of MIS18BP1 via SUMO-ubiquitin crosstalk during mitosis. Combined, our work highlights extensive crosstalk between SUMO and ubiquitin, providing a resource for further unraveling of SUMO-ubiquitin crosstalk.

Quantitative Analysis of Proteome Modulations in Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cells in Response to Pulmonary Aspergillus fumigatus Infection [Research]

The ubiquitous mold Aspergillus fumigatus threatens immunosuppressed patients as inducer of lethal invasive aspergillosis. A. fumigatus conidia are airborne and reach the alveoli, where they encounter alveolar epithelial cells (AEC). Previous studies reported the importance of the surfactant-producing AEC II during A. fumigatus infection via in vitro experiments using cell lines. We established a negative isolation protocol yielding untouched primary murine AEC II with a purity >90 %, allowing ex vivo analyses of the cells, which encountered the mold in vivo. By label-free proteome analysis of AEC II isolated from mice 24h after A. fumigatus or mock infection we quantified 2,256 proteins and found 154 proteins to be significantly differentially abundant between both groups (ANOVA p-value ≤ 0.01, ratio of means ≥1.5 or ≤0.67, quantified with ≥2 peptides). The majority of these proteins were higher abundant in the infected condition and reflected a comprehensive activation of AEC II upon interaction with A. fumigatus. This was especially represented by proteins related to oxidative phosphorylation, hence energy production. However, the most strongly induced protein was the L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO) Interleukin 4 induced 1 (IL4I1) with a 42.9 fold higher abundance (ANOVA p-value 2.91- 10). IL4I1 has previously been found in B cells, macrophages, dendritic cells and rare neurons. Increased IL4I1 abundance in AECII was confirmed by qPCR, Western blot and immunohistology. Furthermore, A. fumigatus infected lungs showed high levels of IL4I1 metabolic products. Importantly, higher IL4I1 abundance was also confirmed in lung tissue from human aspergilloma. Since LAAO are key enzymes for bactericidal product generation, AECII might actively participate in pathogen defense. We provide insights into proteome changes of primary AECII thereby opening new avenues to analyze the molecular changes of this central lung cell upon infectious threats. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD005834.

Risk prediction tools for keratinocyte carcinoma after solid organ transplantation: a review of the literature

Summary

Long-term iatrogenic immunosuppression increases the risk of cutaneous malignancies in organ transplant recipients (OTRs), particularly the keratinocyte cancers basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). cSCC is the most common malignancy in OTRs, with the risk increased to over 65-fold in transplanted patients relative to the general population. There have been very few risk prediction tools developed for accurate determination of the risk of developing keratinocyte cancers in the OTR population. This review summarizes the prediction tools developed to date, and outlines future directions for developing more accurate prediction models that are clinically useful for the transplant physician and dermatologist.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia: A disease characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of muscles, tendons, and joints, without detectable inflammation. Fibromyalgia does not cause body damage or deformity. However, undue fatigue plagues 90 percent of patients with fibromyalgia. Sleep disorder is also common in patients with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia can be associated with other rheumatic conditions, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can occur with fibromyalgia. There is no definitive medical test for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, so diagnosis is made by eliminating other possible causes of the symptoms. The most effective treatment is a combination of education, stress reduction, exercise, and medication. Formerly known as fibrositis.

Have you hugged your product manager lately?

"When someone is compelled to come up and hug you at the Farmer's Market because you work on MindManager, you know there's something special about this product."

This is what Michael Deutch, MindManager's VP of Product Management, shared with me during my first week here at Corel, which acquired MindManager in August 2016.

Michael's an interesting guy. Besides being a yogi, a vegan and living by the beach, he's unlike many project managers in that he's not so focused in on product features that he forgets the real value that his product brings to people's day to day lives. And I suppose that's also why he's been working with MindManager for more than a decade. He truly loves this software and can't imagine managing his work, and life, without it.

So, here's my confession: I'd never heard of MindManager until I was recruited to join this (brilliant) marketing team. But now I am a total convert. Mapping is really therapeutic. I mean it … actually therapeutic.

Think about the last time you wrote a "to-do" list. For me, it's something I tend to do at the end of the day to help myself "close off." More recently, I've heard this described as "mental load" … that it's a burden on our brains when we carry around so many bits of information and tasks to remember. It's exhausting, and ultimately this kind of burden impacts our ability to be creative or even think strategically.

Here's an example of how mapping eases this burden by providing a single locale for all information — at both a high-level and a granular level. In this example, everyone on this project team knows that everything they need is right here in this one spot … no more hunting through email chains or intranet docs!

My colleagues in Germany like to refer to MindManager as the "swiss army knife" of business. Not only is it a great metaphor, but it's incredibly accurate because, as I've learned more recently, there is literally nothing — nothing! — that cannot be mapped. And who doesn't want a map to help them get where they're going?

Over the next little while, I'm looking forward to sharing some of the many applications for mind mapping here on this blog. And if you'd like to share yours, that would be even better!

Now go on … find a product manager in your company and give them a big ol' hug!

Voluntary wheel running reduces the acute inflammatory response to liver carcinogen in a sex-specific manner

Inflammation contributes to the development of cancer, yet acute inflammatory responses are also needed to eradicate tumorigenic cells and activate adaptive immune responses to combat cancer. Physical exercise has direct immunomodulatory effects, and in line with this exercise has been demonstrated to inhibit tumor growth, including diethylnitrosamine-(DEN)-induced hepatocarcinoma. Having observed a sex-dependent development of DEN-induced hepatocarcinoma, we aimed to evaluate the effect of exercise and sex on the acute inflammatory response to DEN. Thus, we randomized male and female mice to cages with or without running wheels for 6 weeks, whereafter DEN was administered and the inflammatory response was evaluated for up to 96 hours. DEN administration caused marked acute inflammatory responses in female mice with weight loss, reduced food intake, release of liver enzymes and increased systemic levels of IL-6. Moreover, DEN caused increased hepatic expression of cytokines, immune cell-markers, and components of the TLR (toll-like receptor) signaling pathway. In male mice, DEN administration provoked similar physiological effects with weight loss and reduced food intake, but less systemic and hepatic acute inflammation, which was associated with a higher baseline expression of the detoxifying enzyme glutathione S-transferase and lower expression of ERα in male mice. Voluntary wheel running attenuated systemic and hepatic inflammation, in particular in the female mice, and shifted the peak time of the inflammatory response. In conclusion, DEN elicited an acute inflammatory response in particular in female mice, and this response was attenuated by prior exercise.

Sphenoid Sinus Diseases: A Review of 1,442 Patients

Objective. To review and report diseases of the sphenoid sinus from the literature and from a university hospital. Methods. Inpatients' data were retrospectively gathered and reviewed from January 2006 to June 2016. Clinical data, imaging, organisms, and pathological reports were collected. Pathology was divided into infection/inflammation, tumor, and miscellaneous. A literature review was performed with the search term "isolated sphenoid disease" in PubMed. Original primary studies with 20 patients or more were reviewed. Results and Discussion. One hundred and twenty-two patients were enrolled. Seventy-two subjects were female (59%). The average age was 54.3 years (±18.0). Imaging abnormalities were found incidentally in 27 patients (22.1%). The most common symptom was headache (63.9%). Visual loss, the second most common symptom, was more frequent in the tumor group (30.6% versus 54.2%). From the literature review, 21 primary studies with 1,320 total patients were included. From all studies and the present study, infection/inflammation was the most common pathology (75%) [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.696, 0.804]. Overall, tumors were found in 18.9% and malignant tumors in 7.0% [95% CI: 0.045, 0.095]. Conclusion. A specific diagnosis of a sphenoid lesion is needed during active investigation. Infection/inflammation was the most common pathology and malignancy was found in 7%.

  • MindManager 10 for Mac (version 10.5)
  • MindManager Server App for SharePoint
  • MindManager Reader for Mac and Windows
  • And the large-scale deployment admin builds for Windows

Enterprise is based on the power of our recently released MindManager 2017 for Windows with many new and powerful features covered here. And if you're looking for info on the latest Mac version, you can also find details about MindManager 10.5 for Mac here.

Here's an overview of what's new in this MindManager Enterprise service release:

MindManager Enterprise for Windows

HTML5 Interactive Map Export

First, we're making it easier to share your breakthrough thinking with everyone in your organization. We've enhanced the new HTML5 Map Export within MindManager Enterprise for Windows with the following new capabilities:

  • Topic Links: Link one topic to another topic
  • Layouts: Horizontal Timeline
  • Layouts: Vertical Timeline
  • Relationship Style: Right angle relationship style
  • Topic Styles: Topic styles visualized
  • Images Optimized: EMF and WMF images in maps are converted to PNG formats to display properly within the export

The HTML5 export can be shared and viewed on any modern browser. Viewers can navigate and search, open and close branches, and access links, attachments and topic notes.

The latest HTML5 export improvements can also be downloaded and easily added to MindManager 10 for Mac (version 10.5+).

Advanced Project Scheduling
Drive productivity and success with new advanced project management features exclusive to MindManager enterprise including:

  • An enhanced and customizable Gantt chart that opens in a separate window
  • An ability to optimize your project schedule, remove slack, and move the schedule to a new start date or to have it complete on a specific date
  • Visualize overbooked resources in the new Resource chart
  • An option to visualize today's date, highlight weekends and non-working days, and quickly navigate to today, the beginning or end of any project
  • New project reporting capabilities

With the power and flexibility of Advanced Project Scheduling, it's easier than ever to see an entire project and improve business processes from start to finish.

2016-12-02_13-50-53 - Advanced Scheduling

SharePoint Integration
We've extended our integration with Microsoft SharePoint. Now, in addition to task name, priority, progress, resources, start date and end date, users can synchronize 'categories' between tasks in MindManager and their counterparts in SharePoint. Make a change in one application and the other application will get updated automatically.

It's also easier to create task plans in MindManager or reassign tasks by downloading resources from a SharePoint site for task assignments within MindManager.

We've also extended the ways to authenticate with SharePoint. Take advantage of new support for Office 365 Authentication, Azure ADFS/On Premises Authentication, and MFA Authentication, in addition to Windows NTLM Authentication and Forms Based Authentication.

MindManager SharePoint Integration

Dashboard Map Roll-ups
We've added a new capability to create dashboard roll-up maps. You can add read-only topics or entire branches from one or more locally stored maps into a dashboard roll-up. This is a great way to roll multiple project plans and status into a single project portfolio dashboard.

The team also made many additional bug fixes and updates.  You'll find improvements to display the interface with high DPI settings, enhancements to the share button in the ribbon, optimized display upon opening of single sided maps like right-facing maps and org charts, and a number of other fine-tuning usability and bug fixes.

2016-12-02_13-45-00 - Dashboard rollup

MindManager Server App for SharePoint

Enhanced Display of MindManager maps

SharePoint 2013 and 2016 users can now open and view maps that look nearly identical to maps created in either the Windows or Mac desktop apps.

The following are now able to be viewed for the first time in your browser when the SharePoint app is installed:

  • Layout Timeline – Horizontal
  • Layout Timeline – Vertical
  • Layout – Up Tree
  • Layout – Workflows, Concept Maps, Swim Lane diagrams
  • Workflow Topic Shapes
  • Topic Numbering
  • Topic Properties
  • Formulas
  • Comments
  • Custom Topic Shapes
  • Resource Load
  • Task Roll ups
  • Task Highlights
  • Topic Styles
  • Map Backgrounds

The new version of the MindManager Server App for SharePoint presents maps as read-only. Users can still edit maps using MindManager Enterprise.

MindManager Reader for Mac and Windows

In addition, we've also released a new lightweight reader application that can open MindManager maps on Windows and Mac operating systems. The interactive reader is perfect for deployment within organizations to ensure anyone can view MindManager maps.

We look forward to hearing your feedback and wish you all the best for a successful 2017!

New MindManager 10 for Mac Update: New Features & Fixes (Service Release 10.5)

We have some good news for Mac users — a free update for MindManager 10 for Mac.

The new MindManager 10.5 for Mac has a number of exciting features including new HTML5 export, an improved UI, Topic Quick Add, better compatibility with maps from Windows, updated images and libraries, and more. It also corrects some issues we've heard from the community and we've removed some outdated capabilities which we will investigate to replace in future releases.

Along with the free update for MindManager 10 for Mac customers, we've also introduced new, more affordable pricing across the board for Mac users. For new customers, the Mac product is now sold on its own for $179/£129/€179. Upgrade pricing is $89/£65/ €89.

Let's take a closer look at some of the highlights of the new 10.5 update:

Universal File Export
html5 interactive maps for mac
We're excited to introduce a new universal file export based on HTML5 which produces an interactive file that can be opened in any modern browser. Reviewers of your map can navigate within the map, open and close branches, access links, attachments and view topic notes and other map data, pan and zoom, search for information and more.

This is the most powerful map export we've ever offered and we plan to continue to evolve and expand its capabilities. It will replace the current HTML5 export which had been listed as 'beta' previously.

New & Enhanced Interface
balanced scorecard map
We've also updated the interface to bring forward the most commonly used features and place them on the main toolbar to make it faster and easier for you to build your maps.

Topic Quick Add
We know a lot of MindManager users facilitate meetings with MindManager and use it for note taking (in and out of meetings). The ability to quickly hop around the map and add new topics to different sections is important so you can keep focused on note taking and not have to focus so much on 'map making'.

We've added the Topic Quick Add, an optional feature set in MindManager's preferences that creates blue frame around your selected topic with plus arrows in the different directions. Hit the plus sign and new topics will appear in the direction of your choice, creating either a parent topic, a sibling topic or a child topic.

View Workflows, Concept Maps, Swim Lane Diagrams, Process Flows and Timelines created in MindManager for Windows

flowchart-for-mac

We've updated the MindManager for Mac's ability to display maps created in other parts of the platform. This is the first step in order to provide viewing capability as soon as possible. You'll enjoy some editing capabilities but we're working on expanding this feature to allow you the full ability to create these new diagram types.

New Images & Updated Templates
Another exciting visual enhancement is that we've added over 700 new topic images which can be easily resized without losing quality. The default size of the images are larger (52×52) in MindManager 10.5 for Mac and allow you to scale to the maximum resolution of 192×192 without losing image quality. You can still access images from the previous version in the Library under the Legacy category. The MindManager templates library has also been updated to include these new images.

Finally, we've been doing some cleanup within the app and removed some of the outdated integrations along with several unsupported mapping features (Labels, Bookmarks, Slides).

I know it has been a while since our last update, longer than we had planned originally. I thank you for your patience. We are committed to making MindManager for Mac an amazing application with plans to continue making new improvements, fixing issues, and launching updates more frequently in the future.

MindManager 2017 for Windows is here!

Earlier today, Mindjet announced the release of its flagship product, MindManager 2017 for Windows.

We are excited to simultaneously release this new version in English, German and French. The whole team has been extremely busy since unveiling our last version, dedicating their passion and countless hours of care to deliver this major upgrade.

Our journey to MindManager 2017 began by working closely with our users through research, meetings with users at their sites and our offices, and via surveys and online communication.

What became clear from listening to you, our users, was the need to share your work with your colleagues who may not be using MindManager (yet)! You asked for easier ways to share your ideas, plans, and solutions with others while maintaining visual parity with the original map you created.

We listened and we created a new universal file export based on HTML5 which produces an interactive file that can be opened in any modern browser. Reviewers can navigate within the map, open and close branches, access links, attachments and view topic notes and other map data, pan and zoom, search for information and more. This is the most powerful map export that we've ever created and we plan to continue to evolve and expand its capabilities.

html-5 export example

Also, to support your ability to share MindManager content with anyone, we've added a new integration with Box and improved our integration with SharePoint by adding three new authentication methods, so now we support Windows NTLM Authentication, Forms Based Authentication, Office 365 Authentication (new), Azure ADFS/On Premises Authentication (new), and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) which is also new.

We're also excited to announce a new integration but this isn't your everyday integration story. MindManager, with our integration into the Zapier platform, is now connected with over 700 different web apps making it the most integrated mapping solution in the world!

Zapier is a third party web application that allows you to automate tasks between MindManager and 700+ web applications and services including Gmail, OneNote, Box, Evernote, Slack, Trello, Jira, Basecamp, and more…

Users send topics from MindManager maps to any of the applications integrated with Zapier. Also, it's possible to set up Zapier to send content to MindManager from these applications as well. Topics are not synchronized; they are either sent (e.g. exported) or received from other applications. For instance, users can build a project plan in MindManager and send the tasks to dozens of project and task management applications. Or, users can configure Zapier to send content like important emails or links to new documents added into your cloud storage to any of your maps, like a project dashboard map.

mind maps Zapier

Another important use of MindManager is to plan and manage projects. Based on your feedback and suggestions, we've made several enhancements to help users plan and manage work with less effort and better results.

First, we added a new visualization for Project Managers…a way to not only visualize a project's critical path within the map and Gantt chart but also the ability to filter on critical tasks. This tool helps managers focus their attention on the tasks that could potentially delay the project if something falls behind schedule.

mingmanager-critical-path-setting

We strongly believe in the power of visualization leveraging images, icons and even topic shapes and colors to differentiate topics allowing you, the user, to add meaning to each of these elements. We believe it's not just a pretty picture you're creating but a powerful way to manage your project, plan and ideas. In the MindManager 2017 release, we've added a new way to highlight completed tasks and allow you to set task highlighting on with or without applying task roll ups. So any task that you're tracking can highlight when it is at risk (yellow), late (red) or completed (green). And we believe you should have the power to turn this feature on and set your own preferred colors.

A smaller but useful update is to provide you with the option of wrapping the topic and task information so all the information is displayed within the map. In the past, for instance, when you had multiple resources assigned to a task, the information was cut off and only visible through hovering over the information and using the tool tips. Now you can apply the wrapping option and quickly scan your map with all the details visible.

But that's not all!

We've added more visual layouts, expanding what you can create and present with MindManager.

Maps and concept maps and even our new workflow diagrams introduced last year, help you visualize and answer the questions of 'what' and 'how'…possibly even 'why'.

map-roadmap-example

With the new Timeline layouts, you can answer the question of 'when'. Now you'll be able to build out dynamic vertical and horizontal timelines to track and present time-based information. For instance, you can use it to display project timelines highlighting for the team key milestones or communicate your company history visually or your future plans. Personally, I envision using it to illustrate our product and development roadmaps. These new layouts provide the ability to show or hide branch content, add important meta-data like priorities, percent complete, notes, hyperlinks and more. You can quickly filter topics within the timeline or leverage the map index to quickly navigate to relevant topics.

We heard over the course of the year a lot of positive and some critical feedback for our latest visualization we introduced last year, flowcharts and concept maps. We continued to invest in this area, making improvements to help users draw flowcharts with ease. We added a new quick menu for choosing shapes in any direction off of a flow chart topic. Simply hover your mouse over a flow chart topic's quick-add icon and a shape menu appears for your convenience.

special-map-featureAlso, based on the flowchart feedback, we made several enhancements to simplify the number of steps it takes to draw relationships between topics, enabled right angles in relationship lines to make a cleaner appearance within your diagrams, and added a way to insert a new topic between existing topics.

Sometimindmanager-map-indexmes we make minor enhancements that have big impacts for our users. In MindManager 2017, we introduce a slight change to topic Tags which might be one of my favorite of these smaller enhancements. Earlier versions of MindManager limited tags to be unique across all a map's tag groups. In other words, if you added a tag called "High", it was limited to one tag group within the map, for instance, the group "Risk". Now, you can add the tag "High" to more than one tag group.

Another exciting visual enhancement is that we've added over 700 new topic images which can be easily resized without losing quality. The default size of the images are larger (52×52) in MindManager 2017 and allow you to scale to the maximum resolution of 192×192 without losing image quality. We've added new categories too, including Design & Engineering, Science & Medical, Transportation, Food, Holidays, and more. You can still access images from the previous version in the Library under the Legacy category. The MindManager templates library has also been updated to include these new images.

To get started, a free trial for MindManager 2017 is available or you can purchase it now. If you have upgrade protection, MSA or active subscriptions, you will receive a download link and new license keys via email within the month. You can download a full functioning trial and you'll receive your key before the trial expires.

Lastly, I'd like to offer a GIANT THANK YOU to everyone who has participated in getting this major new release available. Starting with all of our customers who provided feedback throughout the year to our development teams, product management and design, testing as well as the marketing team, support team and everyone in operations who have helped bring this version to life.

THANK YOU!
Happy Mapping!

MindManager 2017 for Windows Sneak Peek – Part 5

It's Time for Timelines

Leading up to the release of MindManager 2017 for Windows, we've previewed our new Universal File Export which can be opened via any modern desktop browser, our new integrations to send content to 700+ cloud-based apps and receive updates from the same apps via Zapier, and the new Critical Path view and filtering alongside the task highlighting capabilities.

Today, we will explore our new Timeline diagrams.

mindmanager-strategic-marketing-planning-timeline

Timelines
Timeline diagrams display a series of events in chronological order. Typically, they are static diagrams.

MindManager's Timelines, unlike static diagrams limited by space and function, are dynamic and interactive. Open and close the timeline's branches, highlight events with meta data like priority or other icon markers, hyperlinks, notes, attachments, etc…With a click, you can access all of this content. Use the marker index to navigate your timeline events or apply filters to focus the view on content based on your desired criteria (e.g. show me all events that have a red flag or that have been marked as priority 1).

Timelines can be used for a variety of purpose, here are a few examples:

  • Project Timelines: Timelines can be useful for communicating key project milestones and present a big picture view without all the underlying tasks causing potential clutter or confusion.
  • Strategic or Business Plan Timeline: Timelines can be an effective way to communicate key milestones and goals for a strategy that you are implementing.
  • Product Roadmap: Product visions are often expressed in the form of a visual roadmap where the future of a product or portfolio of products are laid out and communicated via timelines.
  • Marketing Strategy / Plan: Highlight your organization's key marketing events and milestones in a timeline.
  • Company History: Communicate key events that contributed to the evolution of your organization, products, and services.
  • And more…

MindManager's Timelines can be presented in either horizontal or vertical layouts and the scale of the timeline is determined by the user and the context of the diagram being created.

You can create new timelines by either starting with a default blank timeline map or use one of the timeline templates. Also, you can change a central or floating topic's layout to be either a vertical or horizontal timeline. It's even possible to have multiple timelines in a single map using floating topics as each timeline's starting point.

Here are some of the many benefits you'll get from building and sharing interactive timelines with MindManager:

  • Greater clarity – Boil down multiple tasks, events and timelines into a single document.
  • Improved communications & alignment – enhance communication and alignment with others. Stakeholders throughout an organization can easily understand where teams are in a process.
  • Greater flexibility – unlike static timelines developed in drawing apps like Visio, MindManager topics contain metadata like icons, markers, notes, attachments, links, etc..Branches can be displayed or hidden, the timeline can be filtered to create alternative views of the timeline.

The possibilities are limitless. What will you be mapping out?

This concludes our pre-launch MindManager 2017 series. We've explored our new exports, the power of the Zapier integration, project enhancements, new timeline diagrams as well as our new image library.

MindManager 2017 for Windows Sneak Peek – Part 3

Receiving MindManager Updates via Zapier

In my last post, I highlighted new MindManager export possibilities with Zapier.

Today, I'll share some examples of how these same apps and more can send content to your MindManager 2017 maps.

Before we dive into examples, let me explain at a high level how it all works.

Receiving Zaps – An Overview

Zapier is a 3rd party platform that was built to connect web applications with other web apps. Now, I know what you're thinking. But wait, MindManager is a desktop application. How, then, did you enable it to receive content from Zapier? A-ha! My friends, we got innovative and built a cloud app that is always on and always connected to Zapier. That way, any updates in any of the 700+ applications on the zapier platform, regardless of when content is sent, will always reach our application in the cloud and will send you the updates when you open the map with the topic that was specified to receive the information.

Before configuring your Zapier settings for receiving content within MindManager, you'll have to tell Zapier which topics will be receiving data. You do that by selecting a topic and using the Zapier options in MindManager's menu to select "Make Receiving Topic".

Once this is complete, you'll be able to send content from hundreds of apps to this branch via Zaps configured within Zapier.

Don't worry if this is a little confusing, it's easy to setup and we'll be providing more documentation and additional resources to guide you through the process. Once you see how easy it is to setup and the initial familiarization, you'll be able to do some amazing things…

Here are some examples!

Forward Emails to Your MindManager Maps

Zapier allows you to setup a unique email address within their system.

Why is this important? You can forward emails to your zapier email account and Zapier can be setup to forward the emails to maps of your choosing.

Forward Emails to Your MindManager Maps

Connect your Gmail, Office 365 or Microsoft Exchange email accounts to MindManager to receive notifications for new emails.

Depending on the service you use, your topics can include the email's subject line, snippet of the content, sender name and email address.

You'll also have the ability to include the email's URL too which can be added as a topic link, providing a one-click way to open up the conversation.

Emails can be filtered and forwarded based on their content…. For instance, if the subject contains "Project XYZ" send it to my "Project XYZ" dashboard map in MindManager.

Web & Social Monitoring

With our new Zapier integration, you can scour the web and build a dynamic MindManager dashboard that captures everything being said about you and your company.

  • Mention: People talk about your brand 24/7, and brand monitoring needs to be just as constant. It's tough to stay on top of what's being said about you and your company much less all of your competitors. Mention allows you to track all of it whether it's on social media or other online destinations.
  • Tweets: You can track what others are saying about your company or create a list of your employees and see what they're saying out in the Twittersphere.
  • Reddit: Someone talking about your company or products on Reddit? Capture it in your MindManager dashboard map.

Automatically Add New Docs to Your Project Dashboard

Working on a project and want to keep track of all of the deliverables in a project dashboard map? No problem.

You can use Zapier to create new topics with links to documents in your project and dashboard maps every time a team member adds a new file to DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Box.

And the possibilities go on and on…

These are just a handful of examples of what's now possible. You can explore the different integrations available to you on the Zapier web site.

MindManager 2017 for Windows Sneak Peek – Part 2

Get Mappier with Zapier

Huge, exciting news for all MindManager users. Our Zapier integration has arrived!

For those of you who don't already know, Zapier is a smart, easily configured process and task automation platform that lets you connect all your favorite apps. It's simple to set up, fun to use, and with this integration, you can send information from your MindManager maps to hundreds of applications as well as receive content from those applications directly in your MindManager maps.

Did you get that? MindManager is now the most integrated mind mapping solution in the world. And you can take advantage of all of these integrations to streamline your project processes from planning through execution, share your content with others, create interactive dashboards and more. This is all accomplished with Zapier's easy to use web app where you can use one of our predefined integrations or configure your own. We couldn't be more excited about launching this new feature.

ZAPIER MAKES YOU "HAPPIER"

Once you create a Zapier account and the new MindManager account, you can start creating "Zaps". Zaps are like blueprints for connecting applications together.

For instance, if you've wanted to plan a project with MindManager and send MindManager tasks to Asana, Basecamp or dozens of other task and project management apps, now you can!

Or, receive updates and links in your MindManager project dashboard map when a team member adds a file into Google Docs. Zapier will let you do that.

Zapier has integrated with over 700 different apps to help people automate their processes and simplify their workload. After the MindManager 2017 launch, you can use it to connect MindManager to all of these different platforms!

In this post, I'll share a few ways to use Zapier to send content from MindManager to other applications. In the next post, we'll explore how Zapier can send updates to your MindManager maps.

Sending MindManager Content to Zapier (and any App within the Zapier platform)

One of the top uses of MindManager is to develop plans for your initiatives and projects.

Plan Your Next Project

With this new integration, you can select any of your MindManager tasks and send them to Zapier. Based on the Zaps you setup, the MindManager tasks can be routed to any of the following Apps to create tasks, trigger notifications, etc…

MindManager, through Zapier, can create Tasks in the following apps:

Empower Your Client Relationships

Zapier also integrates with several different CRM applications like salesforce.com, Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Zoho CRM, Sugar CRM, and others.

You can take notes from your client meetings and phone conversations and send those notes directly into their customer records.

For instance, with Salesforce.com, you can send content from MindManager to:

  • Create new cases
  • Create new tasks
  • Create new notes
  • Create new leads
  • Create new opportunities
  • And more…

Export and Save a Map as a Document Online

Users can also export entire maps to applications like Google Docs, creating a new Doc.

Or, use WebMerge to generate PDF and Word DOCX documents merged with data from online web services. Contracts, invoices, applications, tickets, and more – all created dynamically, saving you time and money.

Or, export your meeting minutes or notes into text files in DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, and more.

And the possibilities go on and on…

You can explore the different integrations available to you on the Zapier web site.

In our next update in this series, we'll explore the different possibilities created by sending updates from Zapier to your MindManager maps.

Don't Wait! Get the Best of MindManager Today and Tomorrow.

When you buy or upgrade MindManager before September 30, 2016 you'll get the current version of MindManager now, and you'll also get MindManager 2017 for Windows when it's released in October, courtesy of our Technology Guarantee. No hassle. No regrets. Just the best of MindManager today and tomorrow. Shop now.

For now, we'd love to hear which integrations you'd like to explore and why. Please let us know in the comments.
