How to Stop or Prevent Ceramic Braces from Staining

Maintaining Dental Braces for Orthodontic treatment is a challenge, while Ceramic Braces or White Braces is a boon which has the same function as Steel or metal braces but is aesthetically much better giving a tooth like color and not making the braces look obvious. Apart from the benefits of the Ceramic Braces in comparison [...]

The applications of regenerative medicine in sinus lift procedures: A systematic review

Abstract

Background

Findings in regenerative medicine applied to the sinus lift procedures.

Purpose

Evaluate the effectiveness of regenerative medicine in sinus lift.

Materials and Methods

An extensive search for manuscripts were performed by using different combinations of keywords and MeSH terms (Pub-med; Embase; Scopus; Web of Science Core Collection; Medline; Current Contents Connect; Derwent Innovations Index; Scielo Citation Index; Cochrane library). The full text selected articles are written in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, or French, and published until 28 of November 2016. Inclusion criteria were: implant osteointegration, radiographic, histologic, and/or histomorphometric analysis, clinical studies in humans using of regenerative medicine. This systematic review was performed by selecting only randomized controlled clinical trials and controlled clinical trials.

Results

Eighteen published studies (11 CT and 7 RCT) were considered eligible for inclusion in the present systematic review. These studies demonstrated considerable variation of biomaterial and cell technics used, study design, sinus lift technic, outcomes, follow-up, and results.

Conclusion

Only few studies have demonstrated potential of regenerative medicine in sinus lift; further randomized clinical trials are needed to achieve more accurate results.

Machine Learning for Fetal Growth Prediction

Birthweight is often used as a proxy for fetal weight. Problems with this practice have recently been brought to light. We explore whether data available at birth can be used to predict estimated fetal weight using linear and quantile regression, random forests, Bayesian additive regression trees, and generalized boosted models. We train and validate each approach using 18,517 pregnancies (31,948 ultrasound visits) from the Magee-Womens Obstetric Maternal and Infant data, and 240 pregnancies in a separate dataset of high-risk pregnancies. We also quantify the relation between smoking and small-for-gestational-age birth, defined as a birthweight in the lower 10th percentile of a population birthweight standard, and estimated and predicted fetal weight standard. Using mean squared error and median absolute deviation criteria, quantile regression performed best among the regression-based approaches, but generalized boosted models performed best overall. Using the birthweight standard, smoking during pregnancy increased the risk of small-for-gestational-age 3.84-fold (95% CI: 2.70, 5.47). This ratio dropped to 1.65 (95% CI: 1.50, 1.81) when using the correct fetal weight standard, which was no different from the machine learning-based predicted standards, but higher than the regression-based predicted standards. Machine learning algorithms show promise in recovering missing fetal weight information. Outcomes after concomitant traumatic brain injury and hemorrhagic shock: A secondary analysis from the Pragmatic, Randomized Optimal Platelets and Plasma Ratios trial

imageBACKGROUND Often the clinician is faced with a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma in patients with concomitant traumatic brain injury (TBI) and hemorrhagic shock (HS), as rapid deterioration from either can be fatal. Knowledge about outcomes after concomitant TBI and HS may help prioritize the emergent management of these patients. We hypothesized that patients with concomitant TBI and HS (TBI + HS) had worse outcomes and required more intensive care compared with patients with only one of these injuries. METHODS This is a post hoc analysis of the Pragmatic, Randomized Optimal Platelets and Plasma Ratios (PROPPR) trial. TBI was defined by a head Abbreviated Injury Scale score greater than 2. HS was defined as a base excess of −4 or less and/or shock index of 0.9 or greater. The primary outcome for this analysis was mortality at 30 days. Logistic regression, using generalized estimating equations, was used to model categorical outcomes. RESULTS Six hundred seventy patients were included. Patients with TBI + HS had significantly higher lactate (median, 6.3; interquartile range, 4.7–9.2) compared with the TBI group (median, 3.3; interquartile range, 2.3–4). TBI + HS patients had higher activated prothrombin times and lower platelet counts. Unadjusted mortality was higher in the TBI + HS (51.6%) and TBI (50%) groups compared with the HS (17.5%) and neither group (7.7%). Adjusted odds of death in the TBI and TBI + HS groups were 8.2 (95% confidence interval, 3.4–19.5) and 10.6 (95% confidence interval, 4.8–23.2) times higher, respectively. Ventilator, intensive care unit–free and hospital-free days were lower in the TBI and TBI + HS groups compared with the other groups. Patients with TBI + HS or TBI had significantly greater odds of developing a respiratory complication compared with the neither group. CONCLUSION The addition of TBI to HS is associated with worse coagulopathy before resuscitation and increased mortality. When controlling for multiple known confounders, the diagnosis of TBI alone or TBI+HS was associated with significantly greater odds of developing respiratory complications. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Prognostic study, level II.

Lowell dentists irked by plan to take office land for high school

After years of debate, Lowell city officials are finally hoping to show a "clear consensus" for keeping the high school downtown during a meeting in Boston this week with the state's School Building Authority - but a group of local dentists is threatening their plans. "In the most recent election, we elected seven city councilors who all preferred ... the downtown location, the majority of the school committee feels the same way, and a referendum passed with 61 percent of voters in support," Mayor Edward Kennedy told the Herald.
