Procedure Volume in Orthognathic Surgery: The Surgeon or the Hospital?

Using a national sample of inpatients who underwent orthognathic procedures in the United States, Gupta et  al1 sought to investigate the role of surgeon volume for length of stay and inpatient costs after these procedures. Given the growing interest in identifying practices associated with improved outcomes for surgical procedures, many investigators have considered the role of volume in optimizing pat ient outcomes and cost of care for this and other areas of surgery.2 We suggest that the data source and study design be considered before concluding that regionalization of patients to high-volume surgeons will improve outcomes.
