Knowledge on infectious disease management among primary care physicians in Singapore and the effectiveness of an educational workshop intervention

Infectious diseases (IDs) have the potential to cause considerable mortality and morbidity, as well as social and economic disruptions.1 Primary care physicians (PCPs) are vital in the prevention, diagnosis and management of IDs in the community, and interactive educational interventions can improve patient management by PCPs for ID issues such as dengue and appropriate antibiotic prescription.2–4 Our study describes the baseline knowledge of key ID topics among PCPs in Singapore and evaluates the effectiveness of an educational workshop to improve their knowledge.

Our institution conducted an interactive ID workshop primarily targeting private sector general practitioners (GPs), who see 81% of primary care attendances in Singapore.5 Study participants were workshop attendees who completed anonymised surveys immediately preworkshop and postworkshop, without discussion or use of references.
