The human body hosts billions of microorganisms. According to one estimate, the ratio of bacterial cells to human cells is 10:1. There are an enormous diversity and specificity based on where the species live and how they interact with each other as well as the host. While bacterial species define how the host lives and adapts to its environment, host-associated factors also determine the microbiome and its components.
