Abstract

Dr. Edward E. Mason rightly called the "father of bariatric surgery" has roots deep in Iowa where he spent most of his professional and academic life. Edward E Mason was the first to perform gastric bypass surgeries for weight reduction. Later, Mason and his associates started performing vertical banded gastroplasties. Dr. Edward E. Mason was also instrumental in establishing the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.
