The Visualization of Interfacially PdHx Fertilized Intermetallic PdZn in Pd/ZnO Catalyst

Controllable synthesis of the well‐defined supported intermetallic catalysts is highly demanded due to their unique properties in physical chemistry. To accurately pinpoint their evolution at atomic‐scale, particularly the clarification of the initial state under chemical environment, contributes to rational design and optimal synthesis of catalysts. Herein we unravel a dynamic formation in a ZnO supported PdZn catalyst by integrating delicate in‐situ transmission electron microscopy, electron energy‐loss spectroscopy and in‐situ X‐ray diffraction. Remarkably, the introduction of heteroatoms (H and Zn in sequence), into Pd matrix, was firstly observed; the formed PdHx was confirmed as an intermediate phase for the intermetallic process. The visualized evolution from PdHx to PdZn catalyst was initialized at the PdHx/ZnO interfaces, then proceeding along the PdHx <111> direction.
