Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairments: White matter pathologies

Chemotherapy is a crucial component of cancer treatment and has contributed to a dramatic increase in survival rates. Unfortunately, these drugs are associated with significant side effects such as fatigue, nausea, sleep disturbances, hormonal shifts, mood changes, peripheral neuropathies and toxicity to numerous organs. One of the most significant outcomes post chemotherapy is referred to as 'chemo brain'. This phenomenon is described as changes in cognitive functioning, with many chemotherapy patients presenting difficulty in attention, processing speed, and memory [1–4].
