Canal-Based Surgery: Does Surgery in the Vestibular Labyrinth Preserve its Functionality? Review of the Literature and Our Institutional Experience

Abstract

Purpose of Review

The purpose of the study is to evaluate and highlight objective audiologic and vestibular outcomes following "functional" transmastoid surgery on the vestibular labyrinth.

Recent Findings

Vestibular outcomes and tests of function are beginning to be reported more frequently in "functional" surgical case series of certain peripheral vestibular and internal auditory canal/cerebellopontine angle disorders. Larger case series with less data heterogeneity and stricter publication standards are needed.

Summary

Complication rates are low in functional labyrinthine surgery and patients report excellent outcomes in general after surgery with regards to subjective improvement. However, there is a paucity of quantifiable data to support the subjective improvements seen. Furthermore, without standard and objective or measurable outcome reporting methods, accumulating data to drive evidence-based decisions is currently not possible.
