We appreciate the comments by Dr. Poddighe and the additional articles referencing the association between infections, inflammation and neuropsychiatric symptoms. In fact, there have been numerous small and large epidemiological studies and translational studies linking infections and inflammation to psychiatric symptoms [1–14]. These studies are helpful to neurobehavioral scientists working to understand underlying mechanisms of psychiatric illnesses. Despite the growing body of literature linking inflammation to mental health disorders, clinical medicine has made little progress in incorporating this new knowledge into the care of patients.
