But while the methodology of diagnostic research has made progress in the past decades, it still lags far behind that for evaluating treatments. One of the reasons is the broad and complex field of applications of diagnostic tests, such as detecting or excluding disease; contributing to patient care and management; assessment of prognosis; monitoring clinical course; and measurement of general health or fitness [1].
