I recently received an email from a former resident and now colleague in which he lamented the shifts in practice patterns occurring in many oral-maxillofacial surgery offices. His primary focus related to orthognathic surgery. His basic fear is that technological advances involving the digital workflow approach to the diagnosis and treatment planning for managing dental deformities opens the door for surgeons with no dental background to treat these conditions. He worries that those who are not oral-maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) will fill a vacuum he sees existing in the willingness of OMSs to do orthognathic surgery.
