The past few decades have seen a significant rise in the use of cell lines in molecular oncology. Most researchers purchase cell lines from commercial laboratories. Thus it is vital to analyze the factors influencing the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the purchased cell lines prior to the study. Although immortalization increases the life span of the cell lines and provides additional time for the researcher, there are few drawbacks to immortalization. (Source: Oral Oncology)
